THERE will be an action replay when Leigh & Westcliff LTA stages its summer finals on Sunday.

The men’s singles final will see a repeat of last year’s showdown with Rayleigh’s Ryan Wilson attempting to defend the title he won against Hadleigh Park’s James Holloway.

Action in the ladies’ singles will see Sue Sergeant (Thorpe Bay) lining up against Lisa Gordon (Leigh).

Both players are in three finals and have the possibility of making that four if they win their semi-final matches.

Sergeant is teaming up with her daughter Amy in the last four of the ladies’ doubles, while Gordon and Pat Taylor (Kent Elms) are in the semis of the mixed doubles.

Sergeant and Gordon will also be facing each other in the veteran ladies’ singles.

The event at Westcliff Hardcourts Tennis Club, in The Ridgeway, Westcliff, will also feature a special one-off event organised to mark the Leigh & Westcliff’s diamond jubilee.

Organised as a round-robin tournament with the winners going head-to-head, the over-60s mixed doubles final will feature L&W veteran Morris King.

King started playing in the league in 1955 and will be joining forces with fellow Invicta member June Pearce, who is well known in south Essex for her tennis coaching.

The will be facing the husband and wife Southend Lawn pairing of Tim and Laurel Padbury.

“Morris is 80 and is through to a final, which is fantastic,” said L&W tournament secretary John Tanner.

“He still plays really well and many of us reckon he is playing better than ever. I played him this week and he beat me.”

The finals start at 12 noon and there will be 16 events contested on the new Astroturf courts at the club.

Competitors and spectators are asked not to use the car park at Westcliff Hard due to limited space.

Spectators are welcome to attend the event and L&W members are reminded that entry forms for the winter championships will be available on the day.

The summer finals also herald the start of the new winter leagues for the L&W. Action gets under way on Monday, September 20.

Leigh & Westcliff’s website will also be moving on Sunday, September 19.

The new address will be www.leigh-westcliff.co.uk.
