BILLERICAY Town have signed attacking left-back, Darren Ebsworth.

The 21-year-old is a product of Millwall’s youth system and spent the majority of last season at East Thurrock United, before starting this term with Brentwood Town before they released him last week.

He will cover for Town’s regular left-back Mickey Haswell, who is recovering from the broken ankle he suffered in a pre-season game with Romford.

Skipper Ian Cousins has been filling in at full-back, but manager Craig Edwards is likely to switch him back into his preferred centre-back role when Adam Flanagan begins his three-match ban for his sending off against Tilbury on Saturday.

Edwards said: “Darren is very tidy on the ball and I’m sure he can do a good job for us.

“And he has got that versatility which will give us cover across the left side.”

CANVEY, meanwhile, are still reeling from the broken leg suffered by midfielder Jon Edwards.

He was stretchered off after 55 minutes of his month-long loan debut for Maldon & Tiptree on Saturday.

Gulls boss John Batch said: “It was a challenge from the side and the break is just above his ankle.

“It is very disappointing for him and for us because he had just gone there to get some games.

“But he will be go back to the fracture clinic again on Wednesday and we will know more then.”

GREAT WAKERING ROVERS stalwart Danny Pitts has left the club to join Essex Senior League side, Burnham Ramblers.

The 28-year-old, who made 286 appearances during two spells with the club, has decided to link up with former Rovers player Keith Wilson, who is the current manager at Ramblers.

And EAST THURROCK UNITED boss John Coventry said he is on the verge of bringing a new midfielder to the club.

He said: “We hope something will happen in the next week or so, but it is not a done deal yet.”
