ESSEX Pirates have signed Great Britain under-20 international Myles Hesson.

The talented youngster played for the Southend-based side in their pre-season friendly against Mersey Tigers on Saturday.

And he has now completed a permanent switch to the club.

“I’m delighted to have joined and this is a great opportunity for me,” said Hesson, 20.

“I’ve worked with the coach Tim Lewis in the GB under-20s, so it will be great to do that on a more regular basis and that’s something which I’m sure will help develop and improve my game.”

Hesson had been playing for Birmingham in the English Basketball League Division Two.

But he is now relishing making the step up to the BBL and looks set to make his competitive Pirates debut when they visit Leicester Riders in the Trophy this Friday.

“I know it’s going to be a big step up from what I have been used to but I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Hesson.

“It’s my first year so I’m not expecting major minutes, but hopefully I can make a good impression for the Pirates.”

Coach Lewis is also hoping Heeson will also make his mark and he is delighted to have been able to add Hesson to his squad ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

“Myles is going to be a real asset for us,” said Lewis.

“He has real talent, is a good size and is very talented too.

“He’s young and British as well, and providing him with an opportunity to show what we can do in the BBL is what the Essex Pirates are all about.”

Lewis also hopes to add further signings to his squad in the next few days.
