CHRIS Vaughan was again among the try scorers as Southend thrashed Hinckley 53-10 on Saturday.

The 21-year-old centre, who also touched down on the opening day of the season against Richmond, bagged one of the Seasiders’ eight tries against the Leicestershire outfit.

And the former King John School pupil was thrilled to help his side record a second successive win.

“We’re very happy with the start we’ve made to the season and it was another good win at the weekend,” said Vaughan.

“We maybe let them back in it a bit towards the end, but overall we have to be pleased.

“I haven’t really had to do much to get my tries, but I’ve been pleased with them too, and now we want to keep it going and get more good results.”

Southend dominated right from the kick-off at Hinckley and, within four minutes, full-back Andrew Frost took the ball from some 30 metres out before jinking through to score.

He also added the conversion and then a penalty to make it 10-0.

Hinckley hit back with a try from Spencer Eke which was converted by Guy Swadling, but Southend seemed unconcerned.

Again quick distribution and fast hands saw Vaughan make a break and, drawing the defence, he passed to Lee Guess who dived over for try number two.

Frost converted and the score again reflected the play at 17-7, Southend soon raced even further ahead with a further two tries before the half-time break.

The first came from fly-half Dan Boughtwood following an intelligent kick forward from centre Sonny Gay, and the second came from winger Mark Billings.

Frost failed to bag either of the conversions but Southend were still in a very strong position as, despite a penalty from Swadling, the Seasiders led 27-10 at half-time.

At the start of the second period, Vaughan went over after a strong run from Alan Barker and Frost made no mistake this time with the conversion.

Frost then also added the extras following a try from Chris Waring and, in the 55th minute, Southend bagged another try The ball sped across the field from hand to hand and finished up with winger Danny Cleare racing along the touchline to score in the corner. Frost missed the difficult kick, but he was back on the score sheet once again within minutes.

This time it was his turn to race down the line and score in the corner and he added the conversion for good measure to make it 53-10.

That was how the score remained despite a late 15-minute rally from Hinckley.

They laid siege to Southend’s line, but the defence was to be proved as resilient as the offence had proved entertaining and the home side’s efforts went unrewarded.

The Seasiders will now look to continue their fine start when they host the also-unbeaten Ealing at Warners Bridge this weekend.
