THE family of tragic baby Leo Coombs laid him to rest yesterday and launched a charity appeal in his name.

Leo was born four months’ premature at Southend Hospital, on August 25 last year, but died 20 days short of his first birthday.

His mum Donna, 35, of Southend, led mourners at his funeral.

His coffin left Southend for a service at Corbets Tey Crematorium, in Upminster.

Later, his loved ones celebrated his life at Room 24, in Southend.

They launched an appeal to raise £60,000 to buy specialist heart monitoring equipment for use with premature babies at Southend Hospital.

Leo’s grandad, Tim Coombs, 60, said: “The scanner helps tiny babies in the early stages.

“It will help make sure all premature babies have a fighting chance at life, like Leo. His doctor has already agreed to name the scanner after him as a lasting tribute.”

Fundraising details will be announced soon.
